Biography
Professor Rory Cox is an award-winning historian and fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He is based in Scotland, at the University of St Andrews, where he has been teaching history since 2011. He is also the associate director of the St Andrews Institute of Intellectual History and coeditor of the review Global Intellectual History. He earned his doctorate from the University of Oxford. He is a specialist in particular of the ethics of war and the history of violence, and has published Origins of the Just War: Military Ethics and Culture in the Ancient Near East (Princeton University Press, 2023). The book explores the ancient origins of the legitimization and sacralization of war’s violence.
