Biography

The award-winning Georgian writer Tamta Melashvili was born in 1979. She lives and works in Tbilisi, Georgia. With a degree in gender studies from the Central European University in Budapest, she is deeply involved in militant feminist milieus. Her body of work consists of three novels, several short stories and nonfiction books, and is widely known for its sharp exploration of gender, power relations and social tensions. Her most recent novel, Shashvi Shashvi Maq’vali, was adapted for the screen by Elene Naveriani with the English title Blackbird Blackbird Blackberry and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023. Melashvili’s works have been translated into multiple languages, including German, Polish, Italian, French, Macedonian and Russian.
