Thursday in residence with Mateo Askaripour

From Invisible to Visible: Seeing the World Anew

What does it mean to be seen, unseen, and by whom? With each of his two novels, Black Buck and This Great Hemisphere, as well as his forthcoming novel, Pure Ox, in 2027, Mateo Askaripour has featured richly drawn characters who, though initially, are largely —even literally— viewed invisible by society, eventually, through choice and circumstance, become hypervisible, forever changing the course of their lives and the world at large.
This Thursday in residence explore the many intersections that animate Askaripour’s work, such as the individual vs. the worker, second-class citizenship, family, and race, as well as what it means for all of us to claim our own stories rather than give in to prevailing narratives. The talk also examine how, through the act of creation, we can better identify life’s many latent themes and gain clarity on what truly matters to us.
